Foreign Health News: France bans free soft drink refills over obesity and diabetes


France has banned restaurants from offering free soft drink refills over the risk of obesity and diabetes. The ban which was first passed in April 2015, took effect on Friday, January 27, 2017 after the government said no restaurants should offer unlimited refill of soda and other sugary drinks for free.

Foreign News: 17 Police Officers arrested in Zimbabwe in Connection with illegal gold mining


Seventeen police officers from Zimbabwe have been apprehended in connection with illegal gold mining activities. According to Zim Eye, eleven police officers from Inyathi and six from Nkayi were arrested on Wednesday last week and have been appearing before an internal tribunal at the Nkayi District police headquarters.

Boko Haram: Female suicide bombers now strap babies to their backs - Nigerian Military

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, on Friday disclosed the new tactics being used by female suicide bombers in the North East in order to evade detection by security operatives. An unnamed 33yr old American woman almost fell victim to her own compassion when she stopped to assist what looked like a lost child by the roadside. It was 1:33 am and pitch dark when her headlights picked out a figure dressed in kids clothes, unknown to her, it was a dummy planted there by robbers.
Two male attackers jumped out at her but thankfully, her doors were locked and she sped off unharmed.

According to Daily Nigerian, Umar beat Naja'atu for visiting her uncle without his permission. The loud cries of the girl drew neighbours’ attention, who overpowered the father and  rescued her.

RIP: Hollywood legend & Harry Porter actor John Hurt dies at 77

British actor, John Hurt who garnered Oscar nominations for his roles in "Midnight Express" and "The Elephant Man," has died at the age of 77, his agent confirmed this morning. He died yesterday Jan. 27th in London just 5 days after his 77th birthday.

Hurt worked more than six decades in television, movies and voice work in England and the United States. He recently played a priest who counsels Jacqueline Kennedy in last year's biopic "Jackie".

Drug convict takes NDLEA to Appeal Court over death sentence


A drug convict, Aluagwu Lawrence, 32, of Iju Ishaga Lagos who was sentenced to life imprisonment for possessing 220 grammes of cannabis has taken the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to the Court of Appeal in contention of the sentence awarded him at the Federal High Court.

In response to the motion of appeal, the NDLEA at the weekend filed its brief of argument and March 27, 2017 was fixed for the commencement of the argument of the motion of appeal.

The appellant counsel, Barrister Vincent Nwanna in his submission stated that the 25 years sentence by the Federal High Court on his client for possessing 200 grammes of cannabis is excessive and should be reviewed by the Appeal court.

Thousands of travelers were stranded on Wednesday, after aggrieved women, numbering over 100 barricaded the East-West Road, over what they termed the incessant killing, raping of indigenes by armed Fulani herdsmen.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the suspects had targeted the Christmas holiday to smuggle cocaine out of the country but drug law enforcement officials at the Lagos airport were able to uncover their plan. The total weight of cocaine seized from the suspects is 1.150kgs.

Gambia’s First lady, Zineb Jammeh, has expressed firm love and support and love for her husband, President Jammeh.  In an interview with the Daily Observer, the first lady described President Yahya Jammeh as a very devoted leader who is able to ensure peace and stability in a country.
"It is never perfect, but it is very important to acknowledge the positive. It is important to say what is negative but never forget to acknowledge what is positive as well," she stated.

Due to the insurgency by Boko Haram terrorists that have driven millions from their communities, women in Lake Chad are forced into prostitution to survive, The International Committee of the Red Coss (ICRC) said on Thursday.

The violence has displaced more than 2.4 million people across the swamplands of Lake Chad, where the borders of Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria meet, and disrupted the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of others, ICRC says. Up to a million people have been cut off from humanitarian aid by Boko Haram despite a regional military offensive against the Islamist militants, according to the United Nations.
