A Minnesota mom, Anmarie Calgaro, is suing her 17 year old transgender child for starting gender transitioning treatment without her permission. Calgaro who filed the lawsuit in Minneapolis federal court Wednesday is also suing her child's doctors, public health and school officials in the suit. Calgaro claims the teen has been treated at a clinic in Minneapolis and is currently undergoing hormone therapy, to transition from male to female without parental consent. She claims her parental rights had been stripped from her.
She is demanding that all gender transitioning be stopped immediately!
In her complaint, she referred to her child as a male and used male pronouns but the teenager, who Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid says was declared legally emancipated under state law in June 2015, identifies as female and has said the relationship with Calgaro is estranged. A legal aid group helped the teenager get emancipated.
The letter cites the relationship the teen had with Calgaro at the time as grounds for the emancipation due to "conduct by the parent in giving up control and custody of the minor."
The teenager whose name wasn't revealed, told attorneys at Legal Aid that she'd been living separately from her mother for at least six months, working two jobs while in school and receiving no financial support from Calgaro and that Calgaro never made any attempts to ask her to return home or report her as a runaway.
Once the teen was deemed emancipated, she was free to make her own medical decisions, in this case to undergo therapy for gender transitioning.
Calgaro's lawsuit included a copy of the letter of emancipation the teen obtained, but notes that the letter didn't constitute a court order.
Therefore, Calgaro is asking the court to halt all medical services.
"Suddenly, my son, without any notice to me, no longer was under my supervision," Calgaro said. "Not only was I robbed of the opportunity to help my son make good decisions... but I also feel he was robbed of a key advocate in his life, his mother."
